We’re number one… #1… yes, we’re No. 1

8 June 2007

We know it’s true, but now so does the rest of the world.  The Terminal is reporting that Birmingham was recently ranked #1 in the nation for “long term economic growth”.  In my day job, I often speak of the diversity of companies in the technology industry as the reason for the region’s economic strength.

The coolest part of the survey is that instead of just looking at recent years (which have been very good), this survey looked back over TWENTY FIVE long years “of changes in per capita income in the 100 largest metros in the country.”

Just for comparison, here is the top ten as gleaned from the full list of 100 metros.  Birmingham ranks above some more recognizable places… and almost ALL of the remainder of the list have higher cost of living than we do, which dilutes the value of their income growth in real terms.

  1. Birmingham, AL
  2. Bridgeport-Stamford, CN
  3. San Diego, CA
  4. Baltimore, MD
  5. Charleston, SC
  6. Boston, MA
  7. San Francisco-Oakland, CA
  8. Nashville, TN
  9. Cape Coral-Fort Myers, FL
  10. Madison, WI
